Dorien BeurskensFounder of Young Africa - Executive Director
It all started in 1995 when Dorien went to Africa for the first time. She worked as a volunteer at a Don Bosco project for street children and this is where she and Raj met. It did not take them long to discover they had a shared passion for development work and they decided to set up their own development organization. After a thorough study of countries in southern Africa, Zimbabwe was chosen to start their project. The possibilities and chances they have encountered since then, which made Young Africa a success story in the development world, are according to Dorien not only good luck, but she clearly sees the divine guidance without which they never could have done what they did. And now that they have reached so much she only wants to reach more, because Africa is a continent of possibilities and opportunities. Here she feels like a human being instead of a human doing or –having. The changes Young Africa causes in young people’s lives keep her going. Africa has a lot to offer, but before it is ready to do so it has to become an equal partner in this fast developing world. Young Africa, driven by the passion of its founders, wants to contribute to this development by empowering more young people every year. Dorien is not afraid to dream big, because there is still enough to be done and she believes that, with the right vision and attitude, it can be done.
