Thursday, 26 August 2010

Gonneke Campen, secretary of the board of trustees of Young Africa International visited YA Mozambique and YA Zimbabwe. She was impressed with the progress of the YA centers: “It has been two years since my last visit and a world of difference: YA Mozambique is up and running with competent staff, head of departments, and 1500 youngsters visiting. YA Zimbabwe managed to reach 70% self reliance in one year time: a herculean effort”.  She travelled to YA Zimbabwe together with the recently appointed director of YA Moz, mr. Raposo, administrator Varela and executive director Beurskens of YA International. Director and administrator went to see their Zimbabwean colleagues in Chitungwiza for an exchange visit. “It is great to see that we all feel part of the Young Africa family”

SERVE's volunteers serve... PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 09 July 2010

9 Volunteers, 2 group leaders and co-founder Chris from our Irish partner SERVE are currently in Beira to serve where needed. Part 1 of their diary:

So this is Young Africa! On our first night here we were treated to welcoming songs performed by the 12 girls who live full time in the on-campus hostel. Although we couldn’t understand the words, or repay them by singing a few tunes as Gaeilge, it was the perfect antidote to the 17 hour bus journey we had just endured. Our first week as volunteers on the Young Africa campus was a busy one. We had all been looking forward to meeting the founders, Raj and Dorien, and they didn’t disappoint. They are such interesting, engaging people who instantly welcomed us into what has essentially been their home for the last four years. In just one week we have begun to see how their approach to development works.
