Gonneke Campen, secretary of the board of trustees of Young Africa International visited YA Mozambique and YA Zimbabwe. She was impressed with the progress of the YA centers: “It has been two years since my last visit and a world of difference: YA Mozambique is up and running with competent staff, head of departments, and 1500 youngsters visiting. YA Zimbabwe managed to reach 70% self reliance in one year time: a herculean effort”.  She travelled to YA Zimbabwe together with the recently appointed director of YA Moz, mr. 2010 Sports Festival PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 11 June 2010

Saturday the 5th of June 2010 was the day the Young Africa Sports Festival was held. 695 young people were registered in different teams that came to participate in Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Netball and Chess.  The theme for the 2010 festival was “Keeping Young People Busy Through Sport”. By lunchtime the crowd of participants and spectators had swelled to more than 2000 people. The guest of honor for the day was the National Soccer Men’s Coach , Norman Mapeza who spared an hour out of his busy schedule of preparing the national team for an international match the next day to come and speak to the young  people about making it as an international sports person.  This meant a lot to the young people because Norman grew up in Chitungwiza playing soccer on the very field they were competing on but he went on to play soccer outside the country and was now a national coach.  The day was made successful by the donations of bread from Bakers Inn through Mr G Munyanyi, donations of drinks form Delta Corporation through Mr J Mutizwa and the donation of T shirts form YA International which were part of the prizes for the young people.
