Our Inspiration

Our Inspiration

The Young Africa (YA) model of youth empowerment was and will always be inspired by one liberal Catholic youth worker, St. John Bosco. His famous saying; “If you want to do something holy, educate the young. If you want to do something even holier, then educate the young. If you want to do the holiest of holies..., educate the young” continually drives us to serve disadvantaged youths in Africa through our Integral Youth Empowerment Programme. We are encouraged by the abundant transformative energy and potential in young people. Thus, ours is a spiritual calling to serve youths, and we serve with passion and love.

Our Vision

Our Vision
To contribute to a world of equality and shared wealth by channelling the power of young people to transform the world around them.

Our Mission Statement

Our Mission Statement
The integral development of underprivileged youth; YA empowers young people through skills training for employability and entrepreneurship. We teach them skills of the hands to make them self-reliant, skills of heart and mind to live with dignity and responsibility, skills of the soul to live with purpose.

Our Core Programme

Our Core Programme

YA’s core programme is integral skills training for employability and entrepreneurship implemented through centres where we offer Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and Small Enterprise Development (SED) services: entrepreneurship training and micro-financing.

A Holistic Approach to Youth Development

A Holistic Approach to Youth Development
Our integral approach to youth empowerment recognises the multi-dimensional nature of the development needs of young people; hence we seek to address the personal, social and economic needs of young people in a highly synchronised way. The YA ‘Integral Youth Development Programme’ is made up of market-relevant TVET, entrepreneurship training and micro financing, Life Skills Education and sport and art promotion. The YA educator must view the individual components of the YA ‘Integral Youth Development Programme’ as related parts of the YA package.

Our Innovative Franchise Business Model

Our Innovative Franchise Business Model

The uniqueness of YA’s employability programming is in its innovative and sustainable franchise business model. Our franchise model enables us to harness local resources for youth empowerment. Every YA centre is set up as a social enterprise which provides skills training through local entrepreneurs, who assume the responsibility to train young people to be entrepreneurs or to be skilled enough to be employed by entrepreneurs. In addition to taking responsibility to pass on their artisanal skills to the young people of their communities, local entrepreneurs pay rent for using fully equipped workshops (or land) from YA. Rentals paid by franchisees contribute to the financial and operational self-sustainability of centres. The franchise model therefore offers a cost-effective and efficient solution to youth employability programming in resource constrained Africa where traditional and cost-intensive approaches are generally failing. The YA franchise model ensures:
(i) financial sustainability of YA centres
(ii) opportunities for on-the-job professional exposure to trainees
(iii) availability of local entrepreneurial role models
(iv) participation of YA centres in the local economy
(v) a direct link between vocational training and its relevance to the economy.

The start-up capital is the highest expense of a Young Africa Centre. However, Young Africa offers value for money as these start-up costs are used to invest in up to 15 different enterprises as well as the training centre. Through our Franchise Model, YA Centres act as business incubators, with the added value of setting up spaces and coaching local entrepreneurs to grow local enterprises, all the while providing our Integral Youth Development Programme at a fraction of the cost of a traditional vocational training centre.
