Between Dust and Dreams: A New Beginning in Lilayi
In Shamva, Zimbabwe, opportunities for youth often centre on small-scale farming or illegal artisanal mining. Young Africa Zimbabwe introduced a mining course through the Care to Share project.
Students train at the Ministry of Youth Vocational Training Centre in Shamva for six months, followed by over 300 hours underground at Canterbury Mine. Leading mining companies are already supporting this cohort with mentorship and potential employment.
Lollymejia Machingura, 18, shares:
“In my community, we survive on mining and farming, that’s why I chose this course so I can practise safer mining. I look forward to taking care of my four siblings and my mother after completing the training.”
For Lollymejia and her peers, the future is promising, not just for them, but for their communities.
