Interview Laura Fruehwald (Puma Energy Foundation)
In our ongoing mission to combat youth unemployment and foster sustainable development, Young Africa partnered with Puma Energy Foundation for a transformative project in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique. We sat down with Laura Fruehwald, Programme Manager from the Puma Energy Foundation to discuss their motivations and hopes for the future.
What motivated Puma Energy Foundation to fund this project in a challenging environment like Cabo Delgado?
Laura: Cabo Delgado faces severe socio-political challenges and high youth unemployment. We saw an urgent need to support the region, and Young Africa’s model was a perfect fit. By focusing on youth employability and entrepreneurship in solar energy, we hope to contribute to empowering young people with sustainable skills.
What specific transformations have stood out from the “Sustainable Youth Empowerment” project?
Laura: The stories of change are truly inspiring. Young people are not only gaining technical skills but also supporting their communities. For instance, young women becoming solar technicians are now providing essential services and creating employment opportunities. We’ve also seen graduates starting their own businesses, like a group selling agricultural products, showcasing the programme’s ripple effect on the wider community.
What gives you hope for the future of the youth trained in Cabo Delgado?
Laura: Current public and private initiatives for economic development present a significant opportunity. Investing in youth empowerment now, can help lay the foundation for inclusive growth. There are still huge challenges, but seeing young people equipped with the skills to build their futures gives us a sense of hope.
How can other stakeholders contribute to the project’s success?
Laura: Collaboration is key: government agencies, businesses, and local organisations can ensure training aligns with market needs, offer internships, and create supportive policies. A collective effort is needed to provide a comprehensive approach to youth empowerment.
What advice would you give to other organisations considering funding similar projects?
Laura: Patience and flexibility are essential, especially in conflict-affected areas. Be open to adjusting project design, logistics and timelines. Most importantly, partner with organisations that understand local realities and actively engage communities. This approach ensures meaningful and sustainable impact.
Any final thoughts on the importance of youth empowerment in conflict zones?
Laura: Youth in conflict zones face tremendous challenges. Empowering them with vocational education, training and employment opportunities is crucial. Young people are the future, and investing in them is investing in a more stable and prosperous society.
