    Background information

Just a year ago, Rachel Chioniso’s future was uncertain. Rescued and taken in by Mother Teresa Zimbabwe, she had experienced hardship that no young person should have to endure. She needed more than just shelter—she needed an opportunity.

It was during a Christmas visit to the centre that Young Africa’s founders, Dorien Beurskens and Raj Joseph, met Rachel. In her, they saw not just a girl in need but a young woman with untapped potential. They knew she deserved a second chance.

Determined to help, Dorien and Raj welcomed Rachel into the Young Africa Skills Centre, enrolling her in the Beauty Therapy course. More than that, they ensured her tuition was fully covered and provided her with a safe home at the hostel, giving her the stability she needed to rebuild her life.

“Young Africa gave me a second chance. I never imagined I could turn my life around after everything I went through. Now, I’m a proud graduate and an intern at Amara’s Beauty Spa, with a promising future ahead.”

    Celebrating resilience

Fast forward to December 6th—Rachel stood among her peers, not just as a graduate but as the top student in her class! Her dedication and talent did not go unnoticed. As a special recognition for her outstanding achievement, Dorien presented her with a gift, celebrating how far she had come.

But Rachel’s story doesn’t end there. She has secured an internship at Amara’s Beauty Spa, one of Zimbabwe’s leading beauty establishments, where she will continue to develop her skills.

Rachel’s journey signifies the power of opportunity, support, and belief in a young person’s potential. One act of kindness can truly change a life—and at Young Africa, we see that transformation happen every day.
